Am I Suffering From
Depression

There are certain points in almost
everyone’s lives when the question, “Am I suffering from
depression?” comes up. Just because you're asking yourself this
question dosen't mean you need to run out and get a
prescription for an antidepressant. There are specific symptoms
of depression that must be looked at before considering any
type of medication.
One day, I was asking myself this very
question. Am I suffering from depression simply because I was
just pondering the notion? Probably not. There are things that
contribute to our everyday moods. Clinical depression is very
different from just feeling down or in the doldrums. You also
need to consider the other symptoms that come into play when a
person is clinically depressed
Do I have insomnia, or am I sleeping way too much? Do the
things that I used to love to do no longer bring me enjoyment?
Am I irritable and contentious? Do I have grave thoughts of
death or suicide that seem overwhelming? Am I suffering from
depression truly?
The real dilemma lies in the simple fact that everyone feels
depressed now and then. However, clinical depression is a
persistent problem. Other people might tell you to "just snap
out of it", but when you are in a real depressive state, it's
not possible. There are also no good reasons for the dark
emotions that you feel, either.
Am I suffering from depression or am I just going through a
tough time? Life altering events and such as a death in the
family or even a rough divorce can cause you into to spiral
into a dark chasm of doom and gloom. There are good reason for
the unpredictable emotions and feelings of dismay. If these
emotions become all encompassing, then it would be a good idea
to seek help.
Basically, you need to ask yourself if your current state of
mind is intruding on your ability to function normally. Can I
complete my everyday tasks as I normally would in spite of my
current dreary outlook? Am I having problems maintaining good
working relationships with my coworkers, friends and family
because of my mood? Am I suffering from depression?
These type of questions are never easy for anyone to answer,
especially if you are in the middle of some kind of life
changing event. Talking to a professional is a good way to go
but don't forget to remain objective and don't let your dreary
feelings get in the way of a real diagnosis.
