Conquer Your Fear
of Flying

When I explain to people that I have
never flown on an airplane, their initial reaction is usually
one of disbelief. After all, air travel is such a normal part
of life in today's day and age, that ;most people simply take
it for granted. For as long as I can remember, I've had a
tremendous fear of flying which has stopped me from even
stepping foot on a plane. This problem didn't seem to matter
that much when I was just a kid, because I never really went
anywhere anyway. Now things are a lot different because I
recently got a job with a Fortune 500 company, and I'm sure
there are going to be quit a few business trips in my future.
That means I really need to conquer my fear of flying as soon
as possible.
Fortunately, the fear of
flying is one of the most common phobias around.
Because of this, there are a lot of different treatment options
to choose from, so all I need to do is find the one that will
be most effective for me. For instance, I've read a lot of
articles, that have had good results, about people who have
overcome their fear of flying through hypnosis. I've actually
considered the idea of seeing a hypnotist in the past, but
never went through with it. However, I think This might be the
right time to do it.
Another good option for people with a terrible fear of
flying is to take an orientation class that is
specifically designed to help people with this phobia. There
are many experts who believe that individuals who are extremely
afraid of flying, feel this way in part because of a lack of
knowledge. They may not really understand just how solid and
well built these airplanes are, and they probably don't know
the basic physics involved in air travel. The theory is that by
properly educating these individuals about the fundamentals of
flight, the fear of flying can be overcome. These courses
typically consist of classroom instruction, an open
discussions, and often conclude with a tour of a small
plane.......and maybe even a quick flight for those who are
willing to give it a shot.
And for those individuals who only have a mild fear
of flying, there are a variety of meditations and
relaxation techniques that will help calm your nerves prior to
take off. These techniques are excellent for those of you who
only require a little push to get them over the hump, and for
those who would prefer to take matters into their own hands
instead of seeking outside help. Personally, I think my own
phobia is so bad that self help techniques will not work just
yet, so these types of solutions probably will not help me.
But I am definitely encouraged by the large amount of
resources that I have seen so far, and I am hopeful that I will
be able to conquer my fear of flying very soon. Once I
feel comfortable stepping foot on a plane, I'll have many more
opportunities in my career and a lot of travel prospects ahead
of me.
