Short Term
Memory

Most people only begin to become concerned about their
memory once they realize it's not as sharp as it used to be.
Short term memory loss will affect just about every single
older adult to some degree or another, despite this almost no
one prepares ahead of time for this issue. People do not take
the proper supplements to help them prevent mental decay, they
do not practice the mental techniques that can help to keep
your mind sharp, and they certainly do not refer to experts who
can help save them from mental feebleness down the road.
Knowing just a small amount about this information before you
need it, can tremendously reduce the stress of aging.
One of the most important pieces of information that you can
learn about short term memory loss is that, in
most instances, it is not unavoidable. Long-term and short term
memory can both be preserved by practicing certain mental
techniques. As people grow older, the main problem they face is
that they have a tendency to become less mentally active. They
are competent at their jobs and used to their daily routines,
so they begin to stop learning new things. Because of this,
their brains atrophy as time goes by. When you combine this
problem with the effects aging has on the brain, you are
presented with an even greater problem.
That is the reason it is important to practice some
short term memory techniques while you're
still young. There are quite a few different techniques for
remembering things. Basically, it's all about establishing
conscious mental tools that will help you remember what you
want too. For example, I have an uncle who likes to picture a
big room when he is trying to remember some important facts.
The room always stays the same every single time, but the
objects that are in it change. For example, If he has to
remember to give a letter to Jennet, he will put the letter
with the word Jennet written on it on the desk in the center of
the room. If he needs to remember to make a doctors
appointment, he will mentally draw a stethoscope On the dry
erase board which is located in the corner of the room. He had
to practice a lot to learn to remember facts this way , but he
says it was well worth the effort. Now he has an incredible
rate of retention, and even though he is well into his 70's,
his memory only continues to make improvements.
For some people, supplements really help their
memory. Receiving the correct nutrition is one of the
main ingredients for sustaining mental function, and short term
memory is no exception. If you have the extra money, make an
appointment to visit a memory clinic. Having a doctor arrange a
program that will help improve memory will make things a lot
easier on you than trying to do it all on your own.
